Figure Friday 2024 - week 32

Hi friends! It’s Jennifer Keane here (aka the person behind paygap.ie). I just wanted to drop in and say that I absolutely loved seeing all of the data visualisations here, and I’m delighted to see people doing cool things with the dataset. It’s taken me so long to accumulate and enter all of the data that I haven’t been able to dedicate as much time to holistic presentations, so it’s great to see what other people are getting out of the dataset.

For anyone interested in building on what they’ve made in the future, I can share that I’m currently doing some updates to the database to include an industry code (GICS and ICB) so that industry level analysis will be more easily available. I should have the first pass of that (including just the top level code) in the next week or so.

I’m also very open to suggestions on enhancements either to the site, or to the data in general - is there extra metadata that would have been useful in the dataset that I could seek to add? Something you think would be useful/informative/cool to display on the site? I consider myself a fairly middle-skilled UI developer, I haven’t kept up with a lot of modern frameworks, but I’m trying to learn more again!

Anyway, thanks for using the dataset, I’m glad you seemed to have fun with it, and I’m also glad that I learned about this community!

hi @jenniferkeane
 welcome to the community.

The data sets you put together are comprehensive. I can’t think of any data point that needs to be added.

Are you planning to create a 2024 data set as well? I was reading about the Gender Pay Gap Information Act, and it seems that every year more companies will be required to publish a report. In 2022 companies with more than 250 employees were required to create a report but in 2024 it’s over 50 employees, if I recall correctly.

If this is a long-term project you hope to maintain, we’d be happy to dedicate a FigureFriday to this data set every year.

And if you think it would help your website, maybe you could even add a Data Analysis tab with some of the dashboards and visualizations that the community has created and will continue creating? :hugs:

Yup, I’m planning to keep this going until there is a central government portal to replace mine. This year it’s companies with over 150 employees, so there will be a lot of companies added to the database for the first time. It’s going to be hard to gather them all but I’ll be doing my best. Based on how late some companies published this year, I think later in the year works as a day to revisit the dataset and see if anything has changed, and I’d be thrilled to see another round of FigureFriday and see what folks can do.

I am looking into adding some data analysis tabs/visualisations on the site and what I see here has given me ideas for sure. I’m not so good at using python so it’s great to see examples and code here to help me along.
