Layout hovermode = "x unified" but choosing modebar compare icon changes hovermode to "x"

I had just noticed with a recent Plotly.js release that the “x unified” hovermode option now will produce a nice -looking hoverlabel box much like a legend box for the traces in a scatter/line plot. However, when first clicked on the modebar icon ‘Show closest data on hover’ and then click the icon ‘Compare data on hover’, the hovermode is no longer ‘x unified’ but ‘x’. The only option then is to select the data again so the layout will restyle and the hovermode is again ‘x unified’. Is there some way to preserve the layout hovermode when this icon is clicked?
