I tried installing plotly on my existing anaconda installation for use with jupyter lab, and received an error, then went through the usual conda procedures to fix the error to no avail… so I thought why not try an absolute fresh conda install 
After the fresh conda install, I followed the directions here:
exactly as follows:
# base plotly install
conda install -c plotly plotly=4.7.1
# install nodejs for use with jupyter lab
conda install -c conda-forge nodejs
# install for jupyter lab
conda install jupyterlab "ipywidgets=7.5"
# install JupyterLab renderer support
jupyter labextension install jupyterlab-plotly@4.7.1
# OPTIONAL: Jupyter widgets extension
jupyter labextension install @jupyter-widgets/jupyterlab-manager plotlywidget@4.7.1
# Extended Geo suppport
conda install -c plotly plotly-geo=1.0.0
and received the following error when installing plotly-geo:
InvalidArchiveError('Error with archive C:\\Users\\wxpro\\anaconda3\\pkgs\\openssl-1.1.1g-he774522_0ags243um\\pkg-openssl-1.1.1g-he774522_0.tar.zst. You probably need to delete and re-download or re-create this file. Message from libarchive was:\n\nCould not unlink')
this is the same error I received before… so I’m wondering if perhaps geo installs a different SSL than previous, and something occurs within the dependencies? I don’t know…
to make an error like this go away I would usually do something like
conda update --all
# and if that doesn't fix it throw in a
conda config --add pinned_packages defaults::conda
conda update -c conda-forge conda
conda update --all # again if needed
However none of the above work… so it’s time to write the experts… those are the exact sequences completed to create the error after a fresh conda install, and the conda / python versions are:
(base) PS C:\Users\wxpro> conda --version
conda 4.8.3
(base) PS C:\Users\wxpro> python --version
Python 3.7.7
