Camel case or not when using style with Dash?

The docs state

The keys in the style dictionary are camelCased.

But I saw lots of code that uses the “normal” CSS dash notation and it seems to work fine.
Are both styles allowed?

I could not find the according position in the code to check how this is handled.
Can someone point me to it or has an idea how it is solved?
