Deadline for applications: Friday 3rd March 2023, 00:00 CET

Expected starting date: September 2023

Bruegel welcomes applications from all areas of economic research for positions as Research Assistant and Research Intern.

Bruegel is a European think tank working in the field of international economics. Established in 2005, Bruegel is independent and non-doctrinal. Its mission is to improve the quality of economic policy with open and fact-based research, analysis and debate. We are committed to impartiality, openness and excellence. Bruegel’s membership includes European Member State governments, international corporations and institutions. For more information about Bruegel, please consult: www.bruegel.org

Research Assistants and Research Interns work closely with Bruegel Fellows to conduct research in the forms of Policy Briefs, Blueprints, Blogs and external publications.

Responsibilities include gathering information; collecting, cleaning, and analysing economic data; producing charts and graphs for publication and presentations; and occasionally taking notes at meetings and events.

Research Assistants and Research Interns have the opportunity to co-author Bruegel publications, depending on the extent and nature of their contributions.

We offer full-time one-year contracts for Research Assistants and 6-month internship contracts (CIP) for Research Interns (both are renewable based on performance).

  • All applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Economics or related fields, should possess a solid understanding of economics and demonstrate very strong technical strengths in quantitative economics methods/econometrics.
  • Proficiency in Python, STATA or R (at least in one of the three), as well as in Excel, is required. Data scraping and data visualization skills (using e.g. plotly and dash packages in Python, or java script) would be useful.
  • Applicants must be fluent in English, both written and spoken.
  • Applicants are expected to be able to confidently, autonomously and professionally communicate with Bruegel colleagues and possibly with relevant stakeholders. Versatility, attention to detail and the ability to work as a team-player with short deadlines are desired.

  • Applicants must have an interest in applied, policy-oriented research in Bruegel’s areas of specialisation, including the functioning of EU policies. Bruegel research areas include: innovation and competition policy, digital economy, climate and energy policy, macroeconomic policy, trade policy, banking, capital markets and financial regulation.

Experience requirements differ across the two positions.

  • Candidates for Research Assistant positions must have at least one year of proven experience in empirical work. This is not required for Research Interns.

To apply, please submit your application to recruitment@bruegel.org with the subject line: “Research Assistant Application 2023” OR “Research Intern Application 2023” depending on what you apply for. Your application must be submitted by 3 March 3rd 2023, 00:00 CET.

The email must contain: CV, Cover Letter, Writing Sample (such as Master’s thesis), University Transcripts.

Applications with missing documents and/or that do not meet the above-mentioned requirements will NOT be considered.
